A tatami is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms.

Tatami are covered with woven soft rush straw. The core is traditionally made from rice straw, but contemporary tatami sometimes have compressed wood chip boards or polystyrene foam cores. The long sides are usually edged with brocade or plain cloth.
